Motorcycles are the theme of the current exhibit in the Douglas County Museum. "A Millennium of Motorcycle Madness" featuring motorcycles from the early 1900's to 2004. The exhibit opened on February 1, 2004, and will remain open to the public until June 1st 2004. Individuals, as well as several motorcycle chapters throughout the Midwest, have joined forces to make the exhibit one of the most impressive temporary exhibits held in the 20-year history of the Douglas County Museum. The
exhibit is at the Douglas County Museum, 700 S. Main, Tuscola, and is open to the public.
Admission to the exhibit is free. In addition to numerous motorcycles, the exhibit
features photographs, motorcycle-related memorabilia, accessories, toys, books, brand-name items, posters, and more.
Throughout the months of the exhibit, motorcycle enthusiasts are
working toward a personal goal of raising at least $20,000 in
celebration of the Douglas County Museum's 20th anniversary. The
organization formed in 1984. A new, full-sized orange V-Rod motorcycle
furnished by Andrae's Harley-Davidson will be sold through the purchase
of $50.00 raffle tickets. The raffle tickets are now available in the Douglas
County Museum's office, or through individual motorcycle enthusiasts who
are selling the tickets on behalf of the museum. In addition, two radio controlled V-Rod
motorcycle replicas will be raffled off with the tickets available for $1.00 each..
Among the other events planned during the exhibit months are a
swap meet, bike blessing, poker run, seminars and displays with motorcycle builders
and mechanics, special safety programs, raffles, guest speakers,
dinners, and temporary mini-exhibits.
The Illinois Department of Transportation will be bringing a
display on motorcycle statistics and their riding program.
The University of Illinois will be bringing a motorcycle
simulator. Persons wishing to participate in the exhibit by loaning items, helping with the display construction, attending planning sessions, making presentations, or reserving a table at the swap meet should contact Sharilyn Russell or Lynnita Brown, Douglas County Museum, 700 S.
